USA Cycling Ranks Thater Race 2nd Best Race in the Nation

(BINGHAMTON, NY) The Chris Thater Memorial achieved the 2nd highest ranking of America’s top cycling events for 2009 by USA Cycling, the sport’s national governing body. 36 different cycling events from around the country were evaluated on eleven different criteria to determine the top cycling events. Two races were rated number one with a score of 46: Chicago and Elk Grove both with $100,000 plus purses and located in major metropolitan areas.  The Chris Thater Memorial received the next highest score earning 44.75 points.

Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala was excited to learn of the event’s high performance rating. “Broome County and the STOP DWI Program are privileged to have the Thater ranked second by USA cycling,” said Executive Fiala. “Those who support and contribute to the Chris Thater Memorial are deserving of this distinction.”

The cycling events that were evaluated were very diverse. Events range from single day events to multi-day competitions held in major markets to very rural areas. Budgets range from several million to under $100,000.

“I want to thank everyone for their consideration and support of the Chris Thater Memorial,” said event founder and Broome County STOP DWI Coordinator James May. “This event goes a long way in helping Broome County promote awareness about the dangers of drunk driving while showcasing our great community.”

The Thater received an extra two point score under the "other" category. USA Cycling awarded the extra two points because the race received more unsolicited support than any other event on the circuit.
